Student Homework

Regions of Africa Project — All work is due on Wednesday December 18

You will complete the following tasks for your region of Africa. Each person will have a different region for which you will be responsible. The more creative you are, the more fun it will be for you and for your classmates.

Map work & Geography

This will be done mainly in class. Complete your section of the large group map. You are responsible for mapping and labeling the following features:

  • All physical features: mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts, etc.
  • Country borders, capital and major cities or historical areas
  • Resources: mining, industry, agriculture, etc.
  • Habitat resources: types of plants and animals that live in the wild
  • Other noteworthy items and/or places

Write one paragraph giving a general overview of the geography and climate and what kind of significant effect that that had on the region (housing, food way of life).

Historical Timeline:

This can be done in class if you have time or for homework. What are the major events that happened in this region between 0–1700 ad? You may need to pick a country in your region to focus on. Some things to look for are:

  • When did the Europeans infiltrate (and who)?
  • Who were the rulers before that?
  • Do the tribes fight or were they peaceful?

Find 6–8 (no more than 12) important dates and events that you and your classmates will put on your timeline.

Civilization Report

This will be done both in class and for homework. You will have to look for outside resources. Make a visual report showing the 6 aspects of civilization for that region or country. Focus on the civilization as it was from 200 ad – 1600 ad, basically medieval time period, pre-European invasion. This could take the form of a poster board, picture book, skit, collection of poems or songs, board game, or your own idea.

Presentations

Presntations to the class will be on Friday December 19, the last day of school before vacation starts. We will have an African meal and investigate Kwanzaa on that day. Everyone is welcome!
